The collection consists chiefly of letters, 1896-1897, to Edward Bok and the Ladies Home Journal discussing publication details for articles by Smalley on Otto von Bismarck and the Prince of Wales. He also mentions the possibility of doing one on Lord Rosebery. A letter, 1870, to "Theodore" mentions an earlier misunderstanding and invites him to come to England. The letter is attached to a magazine print of Thomas Wentworth Higginson.

Born in the Netherlands, Edward Bok came to the United States with his family at the age of six. He worked in publishing from the age of thirteen. He founded the Brooklyn magazine and 1886 he established the Bok Syndicate Press. Bok became editor of Ladies' home journal in 1889. Higginson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1823. He was a descendant of Francis Higginson, a Puritan minister and immigrant to the colony of Massachusetts Bay.
